On behalf of the County Administrative Board of Västerbotten, an eDNA survey was conducted to monitor the potential presence of the invasive fish species round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). The survey covered six sampling stations, with samples collected on three occasions in June, July, and August 2023. No traces of the species were detected in any of the samples, indicating that the round goby has not yet established itself in Västerbotten’s aquatic environments.
By utilizing eDNA technology, a highly sensitive and non-invasive method, this study enables efficient and early detection of invasive species, which is crucial for protecting biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem balance. This survey serves as a first step in a long-term monitoring program, where regular analyses can ensure a rapid response in case of future establishment. The study enhances scientific understanding of invasive species’ spread, contributing to more data-driven and effective conservation measures in Västerbotten’s aquatic ecosystems.
